Join Stoke Newington historian Amir Dotan for an exploration of the 1949 book Back to the Local by Maurice Gorham, illustrated by Edward Ardizzone. This seminal work delves into the charm and character of traditional pubs, highlighting the distinctions between the Public Bar—often a plain, no-frills space traditionally serving working-class men—and the Saloon Bar, which catered to a more middle-class clientele, including couples, and often came with a dress code and a more refined atmosphere.
Through the lens of Stoke Newington’s rich pub history, Amir will illuminate the book’s vivid descriptions of partitioned pub sections, drawing connections to the local establishments that have shaped the community. Using a selection of photographs and architectural plans, this talk will bring to life the partitioned pub that was divided into small, separate sections based on class and gender.
Whether you’re a local history enthusiast or simply curious about the evolution of pubs in Stoke Newington, this talk promises to be an enlightening journey into Stoke Newington’s past and present. Don’t miss this opportunity to rediscover the local!
Please note: The ticket price for this event is the ever-so-slightly increased £5 as all proceeds will be going towards a new print run of Amir’s smash hit book The History of Every Shop On Stoke Newington Church Street.
